Back to school!! This time can be met with excitement, fear, disgust, or anything in between. As a pediatrician and a parent, I understand the importance of setting your kids up for success as they head back to school. Here are some tips to help you navigate this transition smoothly:
1. Establish a Routine
Consistent Bedtimes: Ensure your child gets enough sleep by sticking to a regular bedtime. Sleep is crucial for so many things including focus and learning.
Morning Routines: Create a morning routine that allows for a calm start to the day. This could include a healthy breakfast, packing lunch, and a quick review of the day’s schedule. This may also need to start the night before with preparing clothes, bags, and food.
2. Promote Healthy Eating
Balanced Meals: Pack nutritious lunches and snacks that include a mix of fruits, vegetables, protein, and whole grains. Avoid sugary snacks that can lead to energy crashes.
Hydration: Encourage your child to drink plenty of water throughout the day.
3. Focus on Health Checks
Routine Checkups: Schedule an annual physical to address any health concerns and to discuss your child’s growth and development.
4. Mental Health Awareness
Open Communication: Talk to your child about how they’re feeling about school. Address any anxieties or stress they may have about returning to class.
Mindfulness and Relaxation: Teach your child relaxation techniques like deep breathing or mindfulness to help manage stress.
5. Encourage Good Study Habits
Homework Routine: Set aside a specific time and place for homework. Limit distractions and make sure your child has all the necessary supplies.
Organization: Help your child organize their schoolwork, including using folders, planners, or apps to keep track of assignments and due dates.
6. Limit Screen Time
After School: Encourage activities that don’t involve screens, like reading, playing outside, or engaging in a hobby.
Before Bed: Turn off screens at least an hour before bedtime to promote better sleep.
7. Stay Involved in Their Education
Teacher Communication: Keep in touch with your child’s teachers to stay informed about their progress and any areas where they may need extra support.
School Events: Attend school events and parent-teacher conferences to show your child that you value their education.
These tips can help create a positive and supportive environment for your children as they return to school.
And, remember if you are struggling with your child's start of school, consider reaching out to your pediatrician for help and support!
Be well, Dr. Good
